2646 Smith Street. It was the only house with three front doors. Yes, there was a real place called Smith Street in Hamtramck, Michigan. This was the house where my dad grew up and it really did have three front doors. It was an income, with two flats on the first floor and one flat upstairs. When we visited my Grandma when I was a kid, the house was full of mystery, since we only came up the back stairs to the upper flat. As I looked out the front window, I could see the cemetary across the street, and imagined the ghosts that could wander up to the three front doors. My Grandma always gave me the biggest hug when we left and that was the gist of our communication since she didn't speak much English, and I didn't speak any Polish. Why Smith Street Designs? Quilts represent the coming together of what is important in our lives: family, tradition, home, a place to hang our hats. Making and giving a quilt unites people, represents home, and conveys the love we have for one another, whether it is someone near to our hearts or a stranger in need. Smith Street Designs unites the old and the new: quilting with modern technology; old generations with the new.
